2007 - Armed Forces and Veterans Year - Milwaukee County

(posted 4/8/07) This is Old Main - the Soldiers Home for veterans after the Civil War.  You can play a key role in preserving it and the surrounding buildings and land that comprise the Soldiers Home Historic District on the Milwaukee VA Grounds.  The District is being considered for National Historic Landmark status by the National Park Service.  Right now we are in the review period where public input is being solicited.  The review period ends April 30, 2007, so you need to act now.  Email your recommendation for the Northwestern Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (that was its original name) to be accorded Landmark status.  Send email to dena_sanford@nps.gov.  National Historic Landmark status will give the district additional protection and make

available financial incentives for restoration.

The Milwaukee Soldiers Home was one of the original 3 created after the Civil War - it is the only one that remains substantially intact.  As such, it represents a unique time in American veterans history.  It is the birthplace of America's commitment to the health care of its veterans, and is worthy of protection and preservation for future generations of Americans.  For further information, contact Jim Duff, Milwaukee County Veterans Service Officer, at 414 382-1753, or minjimduff@aol.com.

Upcoming local veterans related events...

(posted 4/5/07)  Don't miss Reclaiming Our Heritage days, June 2-3, 2007, on the Milwaukee VA Grounds.  Reconnect with old friends and meet new ones.  See a parade, view military encampments, and watch reenactors recreate history.  Come for the fun and food, stay for the history and cameraderie.  And more than a little flag waving.

New this year will be a bluegrass band, a creative cuisine demonstration using the military staple MRE (Meals Ready To Eat) as the basic ingredient, and a vintage car show.

(posted 4/5/07)  July 1, 2007 - save the date.  It's Milwaukee County's Operation Freedom 207 - Salute to Veterans at the Zoo, sponsored by the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 96, and a whole host of volunteers.  Admission to the zoo is free that day for members of the Armed Forces, Reserve and National Guard, veterans and their families - along with food and a beverage.  Doors open at 9am - close at 6pm. Lunch served at 11:30am, and a special program at 2pm.

For further information, contact the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 96 at 414.299.9052.
